Statement of Philosophy

I spend much of my time devising clever new angles to attack old problems. In my research I attempt to reconcile accepted "conventional wisdom" with the lessons that can be learned from pluralism and experimentation. Much of my writing tackles the thorny and often inconvenient gray spaces in existing scholarship. I am most interested in what art means to the people who produce it, and how their identities shape their approaches and output.

As a performer, I am drawn to new sounds. I see my chops not only as a literal muscle, but also as an intellectual muscle that must be constantly torn down and built back up. I play an esoteric instrument (euphonium) with a relatively brief performance tradition. To me, this makes it an absolutely ideal medium for smashing genre boundaries and exploring my own capabilities.

Oh, and I'm a jazz nerd.
