Biography

A native of Kansas City, Ashley Hirt is a musicologist and performer with a passion for contemporary music in all its guises. She is currently nearing the ABD stage of her Ph.D in musicology at the University of Kansas, where she has studied under Dr. Roberta Schwartz, Dr. Alicia Levin, and Dr. Sherrie Tucker. She teaches music appreciation to undergraduates and serves as a teaching assistant for various music history courses in the KU School of Music.

Ashley performs on euphonium and trombone with several Kansas City-based ensembles, including the Black House Collective, an experimental new music ensemble. She has studied euphonium with Profs. Douglas Whitten and Scott Watson, and instrumental conducting with Dr. Craig Fuchs. Ashley completed graduate study in musicology under Dr. Barry Bilderback and Dr. Vern Sielert at the University of Idaho. She is currently studying jazz trombone and jazz theory with Ryan Heinlein of Ottawa University.

Ashley's research interests include improvisation studies, American music, contemporary jazz composition, the jazz traditions of Scandinavian countries, music of the 20th century, film music, and music and gender.

She has often been accused of resembling Starbuck from the Battlestar Galactica remake, but she doesn't think that's a fair comparison, as Ashley is considerably less abrasive. In her own mind, anyway.
